We've got Talent !

'We always  try to do an annual teambuilding event with our staff, and we have done various activities over the years, from treasure hunts, to crown green bowling, and I was looking for something new this year. I have wanted to do a music-themed one for a long time. Like all the UK’s primary care workforce, our staff work really hard and, with increasing workloads and administrative pressures, this can hit morale. This is, of course, balanced by the absolute privilege that working in healthcare is, the human interaction on a daily basis; and what better way to share the positive feelings about what we do, than by singing a song together, and , even better, sharing it with our patients to improve their day!
So, when I came across Ian Hooper at GB Music Events, and saw his team-building events where staff form a rock choir, this looked perfect – our suggested  flash mob element  was something new for his team, and it was Ian who suggested filming the event.
So after finding a suitable song, and altering the lyrics a little to reflect what we do at the Health Centre, and maybe acknowledge some of the difficulties patients might have accessing our help, we were ready to go!
So on the 23rd June, GP’s, practice nurses, district nurses, admin and reception, and pharmacy staff all spent an afternoon practising the song under Ian and his team’s expert guidance. None of us had sung in public before, and I was initially worried about how the staff would feel: it’s fair to say that many of us were out of our comfort zone! The staff rose to the challenge in true NHS style, and even added a few props!
Then on the 24th June, with a waiting room full of patients, we did our performance. Bearing in mind we had only rehearsed for the first time the day before, and because of the element of surprise, we could only do one take, and I got a bad case of the giggles at the very beginning, it was far from being a professional performance. Despite this, soon the patients were smiling and laughing with us, and the sense of unity we all felt, and the connection with our patients, was lovely.
I think the sentiment of the song reflects what we do in UK General Practice, and of course this is true the length and breadth of the UK. The fact we did this on Brexit results day was pure coincidence, but hopefully it provided a little light relief at a time of uncertainty. Despite our five minutes of fame, for the sake of our patients, we plan to stick to the day job!'
